Doing tile work is a great job for the newbie home renovator.
One of the most fun jobs of the whole affair is shopping for the materials. Go for excellent quality at good value.
Starting out, check the sub floor for loose or damaged areas and repair any loose nails by replacing them with screws. Next clean the area with a vacuum hose to clear out any debris. Then measure the space to know how much backer board is needed and multiply this number by 5% this will allow for mistakes.
Now, lay out the pattern for the board by snapping chalk lines to show where each panel will be placed. Layout the boards to plan for any panels to be cut and mark the panels. Using a scoring tool cut along the lines that are marked. Then you can use your knee for support to snap the backer board along the scored edges.
Next follow the directions on the package of mortar to mix it correctly. Use a square notched trowel to apply the mortar on to the sub floor in small sections and comb the mortar in straight vertical ridges.
Immediately place the boards onto the area with mortar and walk on it gently to set it into place doing this for every backer panel. Next fasten the pieces to the floor using 1 ¼” screws every 6”.
Apply another batch of mortar on top of each panel and fill in any spaces between the panels then place fiberglass backer board tape and use mortar on top of the seams.
When it is dry center the first tile in the rooms you can keep each tile along the opposite side of the wall the same size. Make sure to use spacers in between each tile to give yourself the correct gap.
Using less mortar spread a layer of mortar down then the tile making sure it fits firmly into place. Place a tile spacer on the corner of each tile to keep everything even and straight. Keep laying tiles in this manner.
Let the tile dry for 24 hours before walking on it. After this period fill in any joints with grout. Finally, wipe down the tiles with a damp sponge to remove any excess grout. Let the grout dry overnight and the next day complete your work with a sealant for the grout.
Tiling is one way you can create a home in your own personal style. Even if you have not done this type of job before, just take it step by step and you will be surprised by the lovely result.
