December 19th, 2010

Have you ever considered installing accent lighting on and around your home? Have you ever been afraid to do so because of either the time, money, or hard work that you thought it would take? If you have, I’d like to clear up those myths and tell you the truth: it’s not hard and it can be done on the cheap. In fact, with so many great lighting options these days, the most difficult aspect of the process is in choosing what styles and types to select!

All right, so let’s tackle the first of those myths: it takes a lot of time. While this may have been the case beforehand, accent lighting these days can be as simple as hanging up Christmas lights! They can come in all shapes and sizes, and have numerous powering configurations. If you’re going for quick setup time, one option is to buy battery powered lighting units. Or perhaps you’d rather skip the batteries and plug a strand of lights into an external outlet! Either way, difficulty is minimized.

But what about money? Isn’t this supposed to be expensive? Well, while one can certainly spend a fortune if they’d like… nope, not necessarily! Installations can be as cheap as you’d like, with many offerings available in the sub-$10 range! One could also consider the way the units are powered as well. For example, rather than powering their lights with electricity, one could simply purchase solar powered lights » Read more: Accent lighting and how it can improve your home

How to Troubleshoot Fluorescent Light Fixtures

December 6th, 2010

If you’re having trouble with your fluorescent light fixtures, there are certain things that you can check to try to find the problem. Obviously, the most common problem is light tubes that need to be replaced. But the problem can go deeper than that. Very old fixtures have a special piece called a starter. This is a small metal piece that actually sends the bolt of energy to the gas within the fluorescent tube. Newer fixtures don’t have this piece, so you won’t have to deal with it unless you’re working with a very old light.

You will probably need to take the old starter with you to the store and at least know the wattage of the bulbs in the fixture before you purchase a new one. Or you can order it online in such a way that you can ensure you get the right piece. The starter you need will depend on the wattage of the lights. If your old fixture does have a starter, there’s no way to test it without purchasing another and replacing it to see if that does the trick.

The problem could also be the ballast. This is what powers the light overall and can often cost as much as the entire fixture. Magnetic ballasts can last for 10, 15 or 20 years and sometimes more. These are often found in older fixtures. A new fluorescent light fixture or one that’s not very old will probably have an electronic ballast » Read more: How to Troubleshoot Fluorescent Light Fixtures

Can You Install Ceiling Lights On Your Own?

February 18th, 2010

For the DIY homeowner, the idea of installing their own ceiling lights might seem like a job that is right up their alley.  In some circumstances it certainly is, but in others you definitely need the help of a qualified professional.  In this post I will show you the difference between these two situations, as well as some tips for installing lights of your own.

You just bought your shiny new chrome ceiling light fixture, and are chomping at the bit to get it installed and bask in its warm glory.  But you realize that the light that you want to replace is totally different than the one that you just bought!  What gives?!  I’ve been in this exact situation before, and it’s definitely not any fun!

The times to install your own ceiling lights is when the new one is mounted exactly the same as the old one.  All you have to do is turn the power off, take off the old light, hook up the new one, secure it, and you’re ready to go.

Unfortunately most lights are not this way!  Most of the time you will have to increase the size of the opening in the ceiling to get the new light to secure.  This isn’t a tough job, but if you’ve never worked with cutting into drywall it can be extremely stressful (like trying to cut a sunroof into your car kind of stress).  That’s not to say it can’t be done, but if you screw it up it’s a ton of work to get it repaired.  If you aren’t sure, hire a pro to install one light and watch them like a hawk to figure out how to do it on your own. » Read more: Can You Install Ceiling Lights On Your Own?

How To Improve Bathroom Lighting

January 13th, 2010

A bathroom that is very brightly lit is a matter of personal taste, and every individual will have a preference as to just how bright they would like their bathroom to be. If you are concerned that your bathroom is not adequately lit however, there are multiple options available to you that will help to improve your bathroom lighting in ways that are tasteful and affordable.

First, make a frank and honest evaluation of your current bathroom lighting situation. Consider the location and type of bathroom lighting fixtures that are currently installed, and determine whether improvements on the existing ones, or replacements might improve the general lighting situation. Also consider that effectiveness of your current lightbulbs. Are they clean? Regularly wiping down current lighting fixtures to remove any accumulation of dust can make a significant difference in the quality of available bathroom lighting.

If there is one location in a bathroom that requires more lighting, it is almost always around the mirror or vanity. This lighting should attempt to replicate natural daylight as much as possible, and is most effectively put to use when installed above or around the mirror area. Opt to make the area brighter than you initially think will be necessary, and if it ends up being too bright, consider installing dimmers, in order to adjust the light based on individual preference. » Read more: How To Improve Bathroom Lighting

Energy Efficent Light Fittings

December 20th, 2009

Using energy saving light fittings is the easiest way to save money and the environment at the same time. Energy efficient bulbs last longer as well as use less energy. Fixtures such as tract lights and floor lamps use less energy than an overhead light with numerous bulbs.

The energy efficient bulbs are fluorescent. They can be compact fluorescent bulbs, which are known as CFLs, or they can be fluorescent tubes. The bulbs can fit into any standard light fixture. The tubes have to use special fixtures but they have unique design and lighting abilities.

Fluorescent bulbs are thin tubes that are wrapped into a spiral to mimic the shape of an incandescent bulb. This enables them to be used in bedside lamps, ceiling fans and other standard light fixtures.

Fluorescent tubes come in many lengths and sizes. They are good overhead light in work areas like kitchens and baths. Smaller tubes can be hidden under cabinets to light a specific work space. They can also be hidden in shelves and bookcases for back lights.

There are also LED light fittings that are even more energy efficient than fluorescent lights. LED lights produce a bright blue/white light. They are best for spot lighting or recessed lighting. The recessed lighting helps to soften the light to give a home a more relaxed feeling. » Read more: Energy Efficent Light Fittings
