Keeping the Garage Organized With Storage Cabinets

August 26th, 2010

The garage is one of the places where we can find some of our hazardous things. We would like to keep them safe and hidden, away from the curious hands of our kids. Open shelves can be great storage places in our garage, but due to its easy-access make, it can be unsafe especially if we have some items there that we prefer to be out of our children’s reach.

If you are doubtful of your wooden garage shelf, then maybe you should try acquiring garage storage cabinets. There are several types of cabinets available in the market, and each one offers security which your ordinary shelf cannot give. Molded plastic cabinets are the most affordable in the market. These can be easily cleaned, are rust proof and are waterproof. There are available designs in the market that are easy to set up. These can be great for cleaning and gardening materials. Another type is the laminated-surface cabinets. These can be made from particleboard, fibreboard, or plywood. Last are the metal cabinets. These are usually the most durable and the most expensive ones, but there are companies which offer lighter and more affordable metal cabinets to the consumers. They can be bought either fully assembled or in parts. These are great for keeping simple garage tools such as hammers, nails, screws and screwdrivers.

Now, if you would like to save up a little, you can also opt to use your old kitchen cabinet. This may not be as sturdy as the three types mentioned above, but they are good enough to keep your garage items safe and sound. You can even customize these cabinets yourself. You can check books and online sources about how to design and remodel your kitchen cabinets. » Read more: Keeping the Garage Organized With Storage Cabinets

Taking Charge of Unclogging the Toilet

June 8th, 2010

Flushing the toilet only to hear the dreaded sound of water swirling aimlessly in the toilet instead of heading down the trap leaves you with a feeling of dread. It is the unmistakable sound of a clogged toilet, taking the bowl out of commission until someone, you, fixes it.

Don’t panic though, just follow these simple clogged toilet solutions:

First: Before the water has a chance to surge over the edges, take the lid off and push down the flapper to close it. This prevents water from coming into the bowl, but it must be done quickly.

Second: A proper plunger needs to be used to go to work on the clog. The ideal type is called a ‘funnel-cup’ plunger because it creates an effective seal against the toilet trap opening. This plunger is easily recognizable by its narrow extension protruding from the larger cup.

Third: It helps to run hot water over the rubber of the plunger to make it more flexible and form a better seal.

Fourth: Once it is ready, be sure it is sealed tightly over the opening, and give as much emphasis to the backward pull as you do to pushing it down. » Read more: Taking Charge of Unclogging the Toilet

Step 1: Quadrants

My garage is probably one of the messiest that you’ll ever find. I had a car that no longer worked parked in there with a whole bunch of old computers, printers, clothes, boxes, school books, shoes, etc. piled up all around it. There was no way I was going to make any progress if I looked at it as one huge project.

Common Fixes For Microwave Problems

March 23rd, 2010

The microwave oven is one of the most useful kitchen appliances. It can heat, reheat and even cook food in just a matter of minutes. Because of this, it is one of the most used items in the kitchen. However, being the most used also makes it very prone to constant mechanical wear and tear. Thus, when the microwave suddenly goes ballistic, chances are, you panic and cannot afford to lose its functionality. When this happens, do not fret. There are some troubleshooting tips which you can follow in case your microwave oven fails to function well.

If your microwave suddenly stops functioning, make sure that it is plugged in well and that there are no loose connections. Microwaves are also often designed to not function until its door is tightly shut. Manufacturers do this to prevent accidents and other potential hazards that may happen if radioactive waves are released from within the oven. If the fuse has already blown up, replace it with a new one.

Another typical malfunction that the microwave experiences is its touch pads’ failure to respond. If this happens after you clean your microwave oven » Read more: Common Fixes For Microwave Problems

Guide to Cleaning Grout

February 13th, 2010

There are a variety of grout cleaners available from solutions and pastes made from ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen to professional-quality chemical cleaners. To keep your grout looking nice, regular cleaning is necessary. Start with the first cleaners, which are gentler and less likely to damage the grout, working down the list if the grout is still dirty and needs a stronger cleaner.

1. Vinegar (either diluted or full-strength) is a good choice for daily or weekly cleaning and also works as a disinfectant. Spray it over the grout, wait 10 minutes or so and then scrub with a scrubbing brush, abrasive sponge or a toothbrush. Rinse completely with water and towel dry.

2.  Baking soda is a key ingredient for organic grout cleaning pastes. Mix water or vinegar with it until paste consistency or make one with 1/3 baking soda, 1/3 vinegar and 1/3 salt. The salt helps it get into all the nooks and crannies.

3.  Lemon juice helps remove discolorations and stains. Leave it on for around 15 minutes before wiping with a damp sponge.

4.  Bleach not only removes stains, but is also a terrific disinfectant. It is great for cleaning off the mold and mildew that tend to grow in the grout in moist areas. The bleach should be mixed with water (1 to 4) and be sure to wear gloves. Only use bleach on white grout; it will discolor grout that has been tinted. » Read more: Guide to Cleaning Grout

Homemade Carpet Shampoos

February 5th, 2010

If you go into a grocery store or hardware store to rent a carpet shampoo machine then the display will most likely have carpet shampoos on it. Those shampoos will be the same brand as the machine you are renting. The idea is to convince you that you need to use the brand name cleaners in the brand name carpet cleaning machines. This ploy works really well with people who are not familiar with homemade carpet shampoo for machine use. But you should not fall for it. Remember that you can make a carpet cleaner with household items that will do just as good a job as the brand name shampoos.

Now, my statement above comes with a small disclaimer. The homemade carpet shampoos only work as well as the brand name soapy stuff if your carpets are already relatively clean. The homemade mixtures are for people who clean their carpets regularly and do not have too many stains to worry about. The homemade cleaners might not work very well on high traffic areas either.

My favorite homemade carpet shampoo is a one to one mixture of vinegar and water. » Read more: Homemade Carpet Shampoos

Maybe you already know how to get rid of mold, but what about that musty smell that mold tends to leave behind? You could try using a product that claims to absorb odors, but chances are the only thing it’s going to do is cover it up for a few hours and then you’re stuck with a musty smell that has a fruity or flowery aroma tagged to it.

So instead of wasting money on a useless product, the first thing you should be doing is making sure that musty odor isn’t still lingering because mold is still hidden somewhere. After you’ve cleaned up the fungus with a good mold removal spray, you can then eliminate its odor.

The first step that should be done is to use a dehumidifier to remove any remaining moisture in the air. You should also invest in a good air purifier, which can help absorb the odors. » Read more: Get Rid of Mold and Mildew Odor
